Receipt Check

Safeway, Oct 27

5 savings found. The top three:

  • Bigger size saves $98.50 a year

You buy ground coffee often. The bigger one you got at Costco (KS COFFEE 3LB, $17.99) works out 53% cheaper for the same amount.

  • Store brand is $2.50 less

You paid $4.49 for KERRYGOLD BUTTER 8OZ. You bought the store brand, SIGNATURE BUTTER 16OZ for $3.99 at Safeway on Sep 20 ($2.00 for the same amount).

  • $2.01 less at WinCo Foods

You paid $5.99 for CHEERIOS 18OZ. You also bought CHEERIOS 18OZ for $3.98 at WinCo Foods on Oct 10.

How it works

  1. 1

    Scan after each trip

Take a photo of the receipt, or pick one from your photos. Every line is read for you: the item, the price, the pack size.

  2. 2

    Get a Receipt Check

Straight away you see up to three savings on that receipt, each with a dollar figure and the earlier receipt it came from.

  3. 3

Your price book and budget fill themselves in

Every item keeps its price history across your stores, and your spending becomes a monthly budget with a weekly figure. Search for milk and see what you've paid, and where.

What a Receipt Check looks for

Small differences are left out. If two items can't be compared fairly, like a pack with no size printed, they aren't compared at all.

The store brand you already bought

Paid for the name brand this week, but bought the store brand last month for less? It shows the difference, priced for the same amount when the packs differ.

Prices that went up

When something costs more than last time at the same store, you see by how much, with the date and price you paid before.

Cheaper at a store you already use

If you bought the same item for less at another store in the last few months, it tells you where and how much less.

A bigger size, for things you buy often

Only for items you buy again and again. It works out what the bigger pack you've already bought would save you in a year.

Charged twice?

The same line printed twice at the same price gets flagged, so you can ask the store about it before the receipt goes in the bin.

A grocery budget built from your receipts

After a month of scanning, Receipt Tree suggests a monthly budget from what you actually spent, less the savings it found. Then it shows what's left, whether you're on pace, about how much a week you have, and which stores the money went to.

One number, no categories to set up. Want to work one out by hand? Use the grocery budget calculator.

What you won't find in it

  • Coupons, cash back or points.
  • Ads, or paid placements in your results.
  • Guesses about stores you haven't shopped at.
  • An account, a sign-in, or a link to your bank.
  • Budget categories you have to set up.

Your receipts stay on your phone

There's no account to make and no Receipt Tree server holding your shopping. To read a receipt, its photo is sent to Anthropic's AI service and the text comes back. That's the only thing that leaves your iPhone. Read the privacy policy.

Questions

How does Receipt Tree know I could have paid less?

It compares each new receipt with your own earlier receipts. Every saving it shows points to a price you actually paid, at a store you actually visited, so you can check it yourself.

Does it compare prices at stores I don't shop at?

No. It only uses your receipts. That keeps every finding provable, and it means the app gets more useful the more trips you scan.

How many receipts before it finds anything?

A line charged twice can show up on your first receipt. The rest need something to compare with, so most savings start showing after two or three trips to the same stores.

Is it a price book app?

Yes, one you don't have to fill in. Every item you buy keeps its price history across your stores, built from your receipts. Search for an item to see what you've paid, where, and when.

Can it make a grocery budget for me?

Yes. After a month of receipts it suggests a monthly grocery budget from what you actually spent, less the savings Receipt Check found. Then it shows what's left this month, whether you're on pace, about how much a week you have, and which stores the money went to. You can change the number any time.

Where are my receipts stored?

On your iPhone only. There is no account and no Receipt Tree server holding your receipts. To read a receipt, its photo is sent to Anthropic's AI service and the text comes back; nothing is kept there.

What does it cost?

Your first 5 receipt checks that find a saving are free. After that, a subscription unlocks every check, the monthly picture and full price history.

Can I try it without a receipt?

Yes. The app comes with four sample grocery trips that show every kind of finding. Load them from the first screen or from Settings, and remove them whenever you like.
