Privacy Policy

Receipt Tree (“we”, “our”, or “us”) is an iPhone app, made by LastLap Lab LLC, that reads your grocery and household receipts and shows where you could have paid less. This policy explains what information the app handles, what leaves your device, and your rights regarding that information. By using Receipt Tree, you agree to the handling of information described here.

1. The short version

Receipt Tree has no accounts and no servers. Everything the app knows about your receipts (the photos, the stores, the items and prices, your price history and savings) is stored on your iPhone and nowhere else. We do not have a database of your receipts, because there is no database to have.

The one exception is described in section 3: to read a receipt, its photo is sent to Anthropic's Claude API and the extracted text comes back. Nothing is stored there.

2. Information we collect

Account information

None. There is no sign-up, no email address, no password, and no user identifier of any kind.

Receipt images and extracted data

When you scan a receipt, the photo and the data read from it (store, date, totals, tax and line items, including item names, prices and pack sizes) are saved in the app's own private storage on your iPhone. Receipt Check findings and price history are worked out on your iPhone from those receipts. None of it is uploaded to us, and we have no way to see it.

If you back up your iPhone (iCloud Backup or a computer), that backup includes the app's data, governed by Apple's backup encryption and privacy terms rather than ours.

Usage and technical data

We do not use analytics or advertising SDKs. We do not collect device identifiers, location data, contacts, browsing history, or crash reports.

3. AI processing: what leaves your device

Receipt Tree uses Anthropic Claude, an AI service operated by Anthropic, PBC, to read your receipts. When you scan or import a receipt, that single image is sent directly from your iPhone to Anthropic's API, and the extracted fields are sent back. This is the only time any receipt data leaves your device, and it happens only for receipts you actually scan. The sample receipts built into the app are never sent anywhere.

The app asks for your consent before the first time this happens.

Anthropic's handling of that image is governed by Anthropic's Privacy Policy and their API terms. Anthropic does not use data submitted through the API to train their models.

4. Data storage and security

Your receipts are stored in the app's private container on your iPhone, protected by iOS app sandboxing and device encryption. Anyone who can unlock your phone can open the app; there is no separate password.

Because there is no cloud copy, deleting the app deletes your receipts permanently, and your receipts do not follow you to a new phone unless you restore from a device backup. Use the export feature before deleting or replacing your phone if you want to keep them.

The connection to Anthropic's API uses TLS encryption.

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with any third party for marketing or advertising purposes. We have no personal data of yours to sell.

5. Third-party services

  • Anthropic Claude reads receipt data from the images you scan (anthropic.com/legal/privacy).
  • RevenueCat manages your subscription status (revenuecat.com/privacy). It sees an anonymous subscription identifier and your purchase status, not your receipts.
  • Apple processes the subscription purchase itself, under Apple's own terms.
  • Google Fonts supplies the app's typeface, downloaded on first launch (policies.google.com/privacy).

6. Data retention

We retain nothing, because we receive nothing. Your data lives on your device for as long as you keep the app installed, and is gone when you delete it or use “Delete All Data” in the app.

7. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, and export your personal data. In Receipt Tree these are exercised directly in the app:

  • Access and correction: every field is visible and editable on the receipt's detail screen.
  • Export: use the export and PDF report features to take your data with you.
  • Deletion: see section 8.

We hold no copy of your data, so there is nothing for us to produce or erase on request.

8. Deleting your data

Go to Settings → Delete All Data in the app. This permanently erases every receipt, image, group and total stored on your iPhone, immediately. Deleting the app itself has the same effect. Neither action cancels your subscription; manage that through your Apple ID subscription settings.

9. Children's privacy

Receipt Tree is not directed at children under 13, and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone (see section 1).

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page.
